STUDENT INVESTOR CHALLENGE is now open!!!

The ifs Student Investor Challenge is open for registration for the coming year; if you have not taken part before, the competition is an online share trading game played in teams of four. The winners of the challenge receive an all-expenses paid educational trip to New York, £2000 for St Thomas More and £200 for each team member. There are also a number of other prizes up for grabs during the competition.

Your team will have £100,000 of virtual money to invest in the stock market. By reading and forecasting data provided online, teams can identify shares and make judgements of when to buy and sell in order to make a profit. We will provide you with tips along the way of how you can manage your shares for success.
You will need to keep your share portfolio healthy in order to gain a place in the semi-finals. If you get through the semi-finals you will be invited to the national final in London where teams are asked to make a presentation on a financial subject provided in advance.

If you would like to take part in the challenge this year please email :

Mrs Lindsay(This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or hand a piece of paper with the following information:

-The names and ages of your team members, 4 in total

-Your chosen team name and password

There is a practice stage which opens on 15 September and runs until 4.30pm on 10 October. The competition then starts on 13 October when all your practice investments are reset and you will start trading with £100,000 of virtual money. The latest date for registration is 2 November; late entrants have their portfolio adjusted up or down following the average movement of the FTSE 100.

Young Enterprise Company programme 2014/2015 -

It’s that time of year again and here at St Thomas More we have recruited and are now underway with our Young Enterprise team. Firstly I would like to say congratulations and well done on all new and enthusiastic members who we recruited, following the shortlisting and interview process. They are as follows:

• Year 10 - Adinan Nsimbi, Conor Philpot, Harry Macal, George Burlock
• Year 11 - Edward Ashcroft, Devang Thacker
• Year 12 - Gabriel Higino-Hoyos, Temi-Tayo Ogunbiyi, Zina Phido
• Year 13 - Jimmy Morgan, Charlotte Brake

Myself and Mrs Lindsay would also like to say a huge well done and thank you to all who applied and interviewed this year. The competition was extremely tough and it took a while to choose our members. Unfortunately, there was only a certain amount of places on offer, however as the standard was so high we would like to encourage those students to reapply at the end of next year for next year’s group.

Group meetings take place with Miss McCague, John Foster (business advisor & governor of St Thomas More), and Mrs Lindsay (Head of Business), every Wednesday lunchtime in BS3.

Our first meeting was held this week in which it was obvious to see the passion, excitement and enthusiasm for this programme already being portrayed by all members. We hope to choose our company name within the next week.

Over the course of the year we will be participating in a number fundraising activities as well as attending trade fayres, where we will sell our product and hopefully win some prizes along the way too.

We aim to have our first fundraiser in the coming month, so… Watch this space!!!!
